Plot Summary:
"Cageless" takes place after the mission to Talos IV, when the USS Enterprise crew has been reassigned and ordered into silence about the events they experienced. Captain Pike, troubled by the separation and its toll, seeks out Lieutenant Minard, who has withdrawn since returning to Earth.

In their conversation, Minard voices his sense of betrayal over Starfleet’s harsh orders, which scattered the crew and imposed severe penalties for speaking about their ordeal. Pike counters by stressing the importance of family, resilience, and growth even in the aftermath of tragedy, reminding Minard that he still relies on him.

Moved by Pike’s words, Minard agrees to help and accepts Pike’s offer to become chief engineer on the Valiant. Before they part, Minard suggests establishing a network to keep the crew connected despite their forced separation, planting the seeds of future collaboration.
