Plot Summary:
The Great Experiment explores the promise and peril of the USS Excelsior, Starfleet’s bold leap into Transwarp technology. Initially hailed as the next great starship advancement, the Excelsior underwent years of design and testing. Its first activation of the Transwarp core ended in a malfunction caused by faulty main control pathways, quickly resolved by Lieutenant Commander Patrick.

A second attempt revealed a far more dangerous flaw: circuitry that retained heat, creating surges that risked a catastrophic warp core breach. Acting on his own initiative, Patrick diverted power from the unstable Transwarp core to the ship’s warp drive, enabling a five-second emergency jump. With Lieutenant Mark Davis’ assistance, he beamed the detonating Transwarp core into space, saving both the ship and nearby Space Dock.

Though the project was suspended, Patrick was promoted to lead research into safer warp technology, while Commander Scott’s warnings that the Transwarp drive was fundamentally flawed proved prescient. The Excelsior itself endured, becoming one of Starfleet’s most reliable vessels under conventional warp propulsion.
