I haven't seen the new He-Man movie yet, but I probably will once it's on streaming. I've heard people say it's great, and I've heard people say it's terrible. So instead of just believing one side or the other, I decided to do a little research myself. I looked at the box office numbers, read what the critics are saying, and read what regular moviegoers are saying too. I tried to get as balanced and honest a picture as I could.
What follows is simply my opinion based on what I found. Feel free to read it, do your own research, and make up your own mind.
I looked into the discussions about the new Masters of the Universe movie, and it seems like people have picked sides. Some act like it's one of the biggest flops ever made, while others say it's one of the best movies in the world. Personally, I don't think either extreme tells the whole story.
The movie didn't do very well at the box office. It reportedly cost around $170 million to make, but it's only brought in about $113 million worldwide so far.¹ ² That's disappointing if you're looking only at ticket sales.
But that doesn't automatically make it a bad movie.
One thing that's interesting is that critics and regular moviegoers don't seem to agree. Critics have generally given it mixed-to-positive reviews, while audiences have liked it much more.³ ⁴ That tells me there's more to the story than just looking at the box office.
Why Didn't It Perform Better?
I think there are a few reasons.
First, it had a huge budget. When you spend that much money on a movie, expectations are sky-high. Even a decent box office can look like a disappointment if the budget is too big.¹
Second, He-Man is still mostly an '80s franchise. A lot of the people going to see it grew up watching the original cartoon. Younger audiences just don't have that same connection.⁶
Third, it had a lot of competition. There were several big movies in theaters at the same time, so people had plenty of choices.⁷
What Are Critics Actually Saying?
Even the critics who liked the movie didn't call it perfect.
Positive reviews praised:
Nicholas Galitzine's performance as Prince Adam/He-Man.
The visual effects and fantasy world.
The movie's willingness to embrace its fantasy roots instead of trying to make everything dark and gritty.
The nostalgia factor for longtime fans.³
The critics who didn't like it mostly complained about:
Uneven pacing.
The fact that it takes a while before you really get to see He-Man in action.
Humor that didn't always work.
A story that sometimes felt more interested in setting up a franchise than telling a great standalone movie.⁸
So, Was It a Flop?
If you're talking strictly about money, then yes—it didn't make what the studio was hoping for.¹ ²
But if you're asking whether people actually enjoyed it, that's a different question. Audience scores show that many fans had a good time watching it.⁴
That's why I think calling it either a complete failure or one of the greatest movies ever made misses the point.
It wasn't either one.
It connected with a lot of longtime He-Man fans, got a much warmer reception from audiences than from critics, but simply didn't bring enough people into theaters to justify its massive budget.
Sometimes a movie can be fun without becoming a blockbuster.
And sometimes a movie can lose money without being a bad movie.
Those aren't the same thing.
